Writing As Unbraiding
Unbrading to Braid - Deconstructing Paradigms to Make Space for the Future
I like to sail but I don’t own a sailboat, which means that when I sail I do it on a boat that has been sailed before by a different crew. A sailboat is a system full of settings that have been configured in a specific way by the previous crew. To sail this boat, it is necessary to deconstruct some of those configurations to prepare the boat for a new journey.
Similarly, Holon Labs is not a startup operating over a blank canvas; it is creating something new within a world defined by legacy systems and, more importantly, legacy paradigms. This is not something unique to Holon but to everyone building new stuff and even to any machine that exists within this reality. Society at large, with a rich, complex history encoded in its established economic models, industrial structures, and social paradigms we all inherit.1 The core challenge for an innovator is not to build from scratch, but to selectively deconstruct this societal legacy to make space for a better future.2
This work is performed while the ship of society is already at sea, a high-stakes endeavor akin to the business axiom of "building the plane while flying it." Deconstruction of the current configurations and paradigms is not only important as an internal philosophy but as an external thought leadership strategy. Writing, as a form of deconstruction, is a framework for analyzing the systems we have, identifying what must be untangled, and building the world that is to come.
Paradigm Deconstruction as a Strategic Imperative
For Holon Labs, paradigm deconstruction is the strategic imperative that precedes all future innovation. It is the disciplined act of separating complex societal systems from their philosophical foundation and motivations. This is not demolition; it is a process of clarification that creates space for new growth.2
The Gordian Knot of Societal Change
The ancient legend of Alexander the Great's encounter with the Gordian Knot presents a critical strategic choice for any organization seeking to change existing worlds.12
Patient Untangling (Incremental Reform): This is the methodical work of reforming existing systems. It involves creating solutions that work within and gradually improve the current paradigm. This approach is lower-risk and minimizes disruption to society.13
Cutting the Knot (Disruptive Innovation): This is the bold, high-risk, high-reward strategy of introducing a new technology or business model that makes the old system obsolete.14 It is an act that can end an "ancient dispensation" and clear the way for transformative progress.12 This is the path of the startup, which is uniquely positioned to create new markets that displace established leaders and norms.14
But the path forward is nuanced. A successful strategy for Holon Labs will cultivate the wisdom to know which of society's knots require a patient hand and which demand a sharp sword.
Tying New Knots: Weaving a Stronger Future
The purpose of paradigm deconstruction, or unknotting the old lines, is to create the capacity to tie new, better knots. This innovation is framed as the act of weaving a stronger, more resilient, and more equitable future. The historical symbolism of knots is overwhelmingly positive. In Celtic mythology, knots are powerful symbols of strength, connection, and eternity.15 The Dara Knot, is an inspiring example for me, representing the deep root system of a mighty oak, symbolizes the kind of strength and durability that should define the new societal systems Holon Labs helps to build.15
The most effective "new knots" are often tied using the very threads that have just been unbraided. This is the essence of the successful startup "pivot"—repurposing an existing idea or technology for a new, more valuable purpose.18
Breakthrough innovation is often an act of deconstruction and focus. It involves finding the strongest thread in a tangled societal mess and making it the centerpiece of a new, more elegant design.
Deconstruction as Content Leadership
True market leadership requires deconstructing not only products and business models but also the external paradigms that define an industry and society itself. A company must be able to critically examine and dismantle the broadly accepted frameworks of thought—the shared assumptions and values that shape the entire market.1 This is the work of thought leadership.
A regular cadence of publications, such as on a platform like Substack, is the ideal vehicle for this strategic deconstruction.35 Unlike algorithm-driven social media, Substack allows for the delivery of deep, long-form content directly to an engaged audience. It provides a platform to:
Challenge Foundational Assumptions: Systematically question the ingrained beliefs that limit innovation in our society.1
Dismantle Flawed Hierarchies: Expose the false dichotomies in industry and social thinking (e.g., growth vs. stability, profit vs. purpose) that stifle progress.
Build a Community Around a New Paradigm: Use direct engagement and discussion to turn a monologue into a conversation, building a loyal following around a new vision for the future.
This is not marketing; it is the intellectual work of reshaping an industry's narrative. By publicly deconstructing flawed paradigms, Holon Labs can establish itself as the primary architect of the next one.
